The survival of the Republic depends on two factors: wise governing by administrators and lawmakers, and the preservation of harmony and justice by the Jedi. It is a practice for Jedi to become guardians of new star systems, overseeing transitions and assisting with local difficulties.

He wishes only to hide from the Republic, become a hermit, and hope history will forget what he has done as the chief-lieutenant of Dark Lord of the Sith Exar Kun. 06:18, early day (Outer Rim Territories, Sumitra sector: Yavin IV): Keeping his identity secret, the fallen Jedi Knight Ulic Qel-Droma, stripped of his Force-powers by Jedi Knight Nomi Sunrider after killing his own brother during the Sith War, has commissioned a down-on-his-luck spacer named Hoggon, a Jedi-phile and collector, to take him to a quiet place where he can live out the rest of his day. He wishes only to hide from the Republic, become a hermit, and hope history will forget what he has done as the chief-lieutenant of Dark Lord of the Sith Exar Kun. Hoggon ferries him to the isolated moon of Yavin IV, without knowing Qel-Droma´s own connection to the place.

During the flight down, Hoggon tells his passenger that Jedi spokesperson Nomi Sunrider has called a great Jedi convocation at Exis Station. As the ship touches down, Hoggon tells Ulic Qel-Droma that great events happened on Yavin IV as it was Exar Kun´s main base during the Sith War: all the great Jedi came to the moon to bring a final defeat to the Dark Lord of the Sith. Hoggon remarks that Yavin IV will be an ideal place for his passenger´s peace and solitude. But the fallen Jedi replies that this will not do. 06:22, day (Outer Rim Territories, Teedio system: Exis Station): Ten years after the devastating Sith War which turned Jedi against Jedi and wreaked great destruction on the Republic, Nomi Sunrider, now a charismatic leader in the Republic and a spokesperson for the Jedi Knights, calls a great convocation, the first in a decade. She summons all the Jedi to Exis Station, an isolated space city and ion mining facility which is the new home for many of the artifacts rescued from the destruction of Ossus, ten years before.

Jedi Knights from across the galaxy gather to discuss the healing of their wounds and the rebuilding of the still-damaged Republic. All the great Jedi arrive, including Jedi Master Thon, Cathar Jedi Knight Sylvar, and even Twi´lek Jedi Knight Tott Doneeta who was recently injured in a terrible heat storm during a clan war on his homeworld of Ryloth.

As the Jedi gather, Nomi Sunrider´s 14-year-old daughter Vima Sunrider, is not interested in meetings and speeches. She just wants to learn to be a Jedi herself, though her mother is always too busy with politics and business to spare time. Brash and bored, she steals one of the small sun-miner crafts and attempts to fly with a corona work crew, but finds herself trapped in the star´s magnetic storms. Tott Doneeta saves her and brings the girl back to Exis Station, where she faces Nomi Sunrider´s stern rebukes.  (note: although Star Wars: The Comics Companion has this comicbook mini-series dated at 3,981.5 BBY, this is an erroneously date which has been corrected by Leland Chee and other publications as Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi: Redemption takes place ´ten years after the devastating Sith War´)

He wishes only to hide from the Republic, become a hermit, and hope history will forget what he has done as the chief-lieutenant of Dark Lord of the Sith Exar Kun. Hoggon takes him to Rhen Var, a hibernating world just emerging from its latest ice age. Hoggon explains that the civilization on Rhen Var died when the glaciers came, but many structures on the world remain intact.

Landing his vessel, Hoggon shows Ulic Qel-Droma a huge structure. The former Jedi Knight likes what he sees and tells Hoggon to leave him. With that, Hoggon immediately takes off for Exis Station, hoping to catch a glimpse of all those legendary Jedi Knights at the great Jedi convocation. One speaker, the bitter Cathar Jedi Knight Sylvar, rails against the vanished war-criminal Ulic Qel-Droma, who roams the galaxy, unpunished. Sensing the shimmering anger in the Cathar Jedi Sylvar, Twi´lek Jedi Knight Tott Doneeta invites her to join him in his cliff city on Ryloth.

Meanwhile, Nomi Sunrider´s 14-year-old daughter Vima Sunrider feels left out. Her mother is always too busy to train her as a Jedi. After hearing so much about Ulic Qel-Droma and remembering him from her childhood, she decides to go in search of him. She stows away aboard Hoggon´s ship, letting the Force take her wherever it will.

When Hoggon discovers Vima Sunrider on his ship, he is astounded to learn that the mysterious stranger he took to Rhen Var a couple of days ago is in fact Ulic Qel-Droma himself. Its captain, a Jedi-phile and collector named Hoggon, agreed to take her to Rhen Var after he learned that the mysterious stranger he took to the world a couple of days ago was the fallen Jedi Knight Ulic Qel-Droma. As Hoggon drops the young girl off, he flies off, thrilled with the secret knowledge he has learned. Vima Sunrider slogs up to the nearby frozen fortress, hoping Ulic Qel-Droma will welcome her.

Vima Sunrider enters the ice fortress in search of Ulic Qel-Droma. She calls out, hoping to find him, hoping he will teach her to be a Jedi. But when she finds the bitter, guilt-ridden man, he sees a vision of her mother, his beloved Nomi Sunrider. He refuses to train her, insisting he is no longer a Jedi, and turns her out into the snow.

Vima Sunrider wanders forlorn and lost through a growing blizzard, unaware of her danger, until Ulic Qel-Droma rescues her. The two take shelter to wait out the storm. During the night, Qel-Droma gradually warms to the company, and tells her of his tragic days as a Jedi. But when Vima Sunrider still wants him to train her, he agrees. While there, Sylvar becomes embroiled in a Twi´lek clan war and nearly triggers the slaughter of an entire village, but Doneeta manages to stop the bloodshed in a peaceful way. 06:28, day – late evening (Outer Rim Territories: Cathar): Twi’lek Jedi Knight Tott Doneeta travels with the bitter and angry Cathar Jedi Knight Sylvar to her homeworld of Cathar, where she is received as a returning hero. She seeks out her old mentor, Kharr, who tries to help her vanquish the ghosts in her mind. Sylvar explains that her mate Crado was killed during the Sith War ten years ago: she can never take another mate, and can never have children. And the one responsible, the fallen Jedi Knight Ulic Qel-Droma, is still alive and roams the galaxy unpunished. Kharr remarks that she is fighting the wrong enemy: she has to kill the anger within herself. Sylvar agrees and decides to go out on a blood hunt, a Cathar ritual to hunt down dangerous prey and purge the inner violence and fury. 06:29, morning (Outer Rim Territories): Setting his ship on autopilot, the down-on-his-luck spacer named Hoggon, a Jedi-phile and collector, begins to think about the events of the last few days: the most important thing is that he learned that the mysterious stranger he took to Rhen Var a couple of days ago was the fallen Jedi Knight Ulic Qel-Droma. Now he has brought young Vima Sunrider to the same world, without her mother, the renowned Jedi Knight Nomi Sunrider’s knowledge. Deciding that the Jedi need to know about this information, Hoggon sets a course for Exis Station, the location of a great Jedi convocation which recently ended. 06:29, late morning - day (Outer Rim Territories: Cathar): Yesterday, the bitter and angry Cathar Jedi Knight Sylvar returned to her homeworld of Cathar, where she was received as a returning hero. She sought out her old mentor, Kharr, who tried to help her vanquish the ghosts in her mind. Kharr explained that she was fighting the wrong enemy: she has to kill the anger within herself. Sylvar agreed and decided to go out on a blood hunt, a Cathar ritual to hunt down dangerous prey and purge the inner violence and fury.

Sylvar explains to Twi’lek Jedi Knight Tott Doneeta what is troubling her and remarks that she will go out on a blood hunt. She asks him if he will come with her, and Doneeta replies that he would be honored.

Sylvar and Tott Doneeta head off to a nest of destructive insectoid creatures, the Kiltik. Slipping inside, they attack the creatures. Sylvar is utterly filled with violence and fury, and she becomes a whirlwind of teeth, claws, and lightsaber. Appalled by the magnitude of her unleashed violence, Tott Doneeta leaves her alone, telling Sylvar that she must find her own release, her own serenity. By herself, Sylvar begins to seek to calm the storm in her heart. She tells her mother that she is safe, and that she is going to be trained as a Jedi by her former friend, Ulic Qel-Droma.

The down-on-his-luck spacer Hoggon, a Jedi-phile and collector, is brought into Nomi Sunrider’s chambers. An aide announces that Hoggon has some urgent news. But the distraught Nomi Sunrider refuses to hear him, and he is taken away, unable to inform her of the location of Ulic Qel-Droma. Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi: Redemption # 4 (of 5) (The Trials of a Jedi)                                                                                                                                       pages 2 - 7

09:06, late day - night (Outer Rim Territories: Cathar): Sylvar, the ferocious Cathar Jedi Knight, has gone into isolation, hunting and killing great beasts on savannas of her homeworld. She has directed all her anger and energy toward thoughts of revenge, aimed at the fallen Jedi Knight Ulic Qel-droma whom she holds responsible for the death of her mate, Crado, ten years earlier during the Sith War. Although Sylvar has killed numerous monstrous animals, she is still unable to quench her inner rage.

During the night, a messenger comes to her campfire, informing her that Vima Sunrider, the daughter of Jedi Knight Nomi Sunrider, has vanished. Sylvar rushes to offer Nomi Sunrider any help she can give. (note: although Star Wars: The Comics Companion has this comicbook mini-series dated at 3,981.5 BBY, this is an erroneously date which has been corrected by Leland Chee and other publications as Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi: Redemption takes place ´ten years after the devastating Sith War´. And I have placed this entry three months after the previous issues of Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi: Redemption, conjecturing the MD-date from the real-life publication date of # 4, because it is obvious that Vima Sunrider has trained under Ulic Qel-Droma for some while already)

09:07, early morning (Outer Rim Territories: Rhen Var): The powerless, exiled fallen Jedi Knight Ulic Qel-Droma continues to train Vima Sunrider, the 14-year-old daughter of the renown Jedi Knight Nomi Sunrider. At last, young Sunrider builds her own lightsaber, using the Adegan crystals of her father, Jedi Knight Andur Sunrider who was killed 14 years before, and spars with her teacher, even though the grim man has been blinded to the Force. But he still remembers what it is to be a Jedi Knight, and reluctantly teaches Vima Sunrider all he knowns. But once again, Hoggon is dragged away by security forces. In a last attempt, he shouts out that Ulic Qel-Droma is on the frozen world of Rhen Var. But the security officers refuse to believe him. 09:14, day (Outer Rim Territories, Teedio system: Exis Station): Cathar Jedi Knight Sylvar arrives at Exis Station, an isolated space city and ion mining facility which is the new home for many of the artifacts rescued from the destruction of Ossus, ten years before. Jedi Knight Nomi Sunrider, whose daughter Vima Sunrider has run off to start training under the fallen Jedi Knight Ulic Qel-Droma, is glad to see her friend. When Sylvar hears that Vima Sunrider is with Ulic Qel-Droma, the Cathar Jedi feels the rage building inside her, as she holds the fallen Jedi responsible for the death of her mate Crado.

When Sylvar returns to the hangar bay, she is stopped by the down-on-his-luck spacer Hoggon, a Jedi-phile and collector, who tells her that he can take her to Ulic Qel-Droma.

Back in her chambers, Nomi Sunrider realizes that with all of her work for the Republic, she has neglected her own daughter. At that moment, she decides to leave her duties for the Republic for a time and begin training her daughter. Boarding a ship, she concentrates on the Force to find Ulic Qel-Droma. 09:16, morning (Outer Rim Territories: Rhen Var): The powerless, exiled fallen Jedi Knight Ulic Qel-Droma continues to train Vima Sunrider, the 14-year-old daughter of the renown Jedi Knight Nomi Sunrider. Together, the two of them start to carve giant busts from the ice, using only their lightsabers. Qel-Droma is carving the image of Jedi Master Arca Jeth in the ice, while Vima Sunrider uses the Force to recreate the image of her father, Jedi Knight Andur Sunrider who was killed shortly after her birth. 09:17, morning (Outer Rim Territories: Rhen Var): The powerless, exiled fallen Jedi Knight Ulic Qel-Droma continues to train Vima Sunrider, the 14-year-old daughter of his former friend, Jedi Knight Nomi Sunrider. After another sparring-match, Vima Sunrider suddenly senses that her mother is approaching. Moments later, Nomi Sunrider appears, asking her daughter to accompany her back home. But Vima Sunrider refuses, explaining that she is staying as she is the apprentice of Ulic Qel-Droma. But the fallen Jedi Knight tells Nomi Sunrider that Vima is her daughter and that if she is ready to teach her, she can complete her daughter’s training. Realizing that Ulic Qel-Droma is trying to help her, Vima Sunrider turns to her mother, explaining that he has brought out her potential to be a Jedi: she wants to show her mother what she has achieved. As Qel-Droma retreats to leave mother and daughter alone, Vima Sunrider leads Nomi Sunrider outside to a balcony. She shows her mother the giant ice-sculpts she made with Ulic Qel-Droma: the image of Jedi Master Arca Jeth next to the image of Andur Sunrider. With tears in her eyes, Nomi Sunrider hugs her daughter.

Nearby, the ship of the down-on-his-luck spacer Hoggon, a Jedi-phile and collector, lands. He offers Cathar Jedi Knight Sylvar his help in tracking down Ulic Qel-droma, but she refuses. Making her way into the fortress, Sylvar confronts Ulic Qel-Droma, remarking that he has to die for his crimes against the Republic and for killing her mate, Crado. The two engage in a fierce lightsaber battle.

Nomi Sunrider senses a struggle, and suddenly realizes that Sylvar is fighting Ulic Qel-Droma. Vima Sunrider runs off, yelling that she has to help her master.

As Hoggon is watching, Sylvar drives Ulic Qel-Droma out onto a ledge. Shutting his lightsaber off, Qel-Droma tells Sylvar that although he cannot change the past, he meant to do good. He then states that he will not fight the Cathar Jedi. Enraged, Sylvar brings down her lightsaber, stopping at the last moment. Cursing, she lowers her weapon, remarking that after all this time of hating, he had to be the one to free her from her anger. But just as Vima Sunrider and her mother run out onto the ledge, a blaster shot rips through Ulic Qel-Droma’s chest. Screaming, young Sunrider runs toward her master as nearby, Hoggon triumphantically holds up a small blaster. Sylvar confronts the spacer, telling him that if not for the man he had just killed, she would tear his throat out. Shocked, Hoggon turns around and runs off.

With Nomi Sunrider and her daughter at his side, the dying Ulic Qel-Droma asks them for forgiveness. Nomi Sunrider replies that she has already done that. Turning his attention to Vima Sunrider who loved him like the father she had never known, Ulic Qel-Droma remarks that she is a Jedi now. With tears in her eyes, Nomi Sunrider hugs Ulic Qel-Droma. Then, to everyone’s astonishment, though he had been blinded to the Force, Ulic Qel-Droma vanishes into the light. His luminous being demonstrated that, despite everything, he had finally reached the mental and spiritual point where he had become a true Jedi Master.

Afterwards, Nomi and Vima Sunrider return to the Jedi Knights with a new sense of commitment to the Force.
