The survival of the Republic depends on two factors: wise governing by administrators and lawmakers, and the preservation of harmony and justice by the Jedi. It is a practice for Jedi to become guardians of new star systems, overseeing transitions and assisting with local difficulties.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic # 9 (Flashpoint Interlude: Homecoming)                                                                                                                        pages 10 - 12

01:18, evening (Core Worlds: Coruscant, Republic City): At the Draay Estate, youngling Lucien Draay once again asks his mother, Jedi Consular Lady Krynda Draay, why he cannot train with her students. Lady Draay replies that he has her assistant, Haazen, to teach him. But when Lucien Draay remarks that Haazen is just a failed Padawan and that her Miraluka students cannot even see, Krynda Draay furiously replies that they can see farther than he can. She remarks that it was her destiny to have both sight and second sight, and it was his to have sight alone, just like his father. Saddened, she turns away from her son, remarking that if she could only have seen the evil surrounding them a few years ago, her husband might still be alive, as well as her sister and Jedi Master Vodo-Siosk Baas. Then she tells her son to leave her. As Lucien Draay turns around, he sees Haazen who has heard the entire conversation. Haazen remarks that Lucien Draay would know better than to mention the Sith War to his mother. He explains that although his mother is a great Jedi, she spends every day in shame: the greatest Jedi could not foresee the rise of Dark Lord of the Sith Exar Kun, one right in their midst, and many people died for it. (note: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic # 9 states that this event occurs ‘twenty-five years ago’)
