4,002 Standard Years before the establishment of the New Republic

The survival of the Republic depends on two factors: wise governing by administrators and lawmakers, and the preservation of harmony and justice by the Jedi. It is a practice for Jedi to become guardians of new star systems, overseeing transitions and assisting with local difficulties.

Back on Onderon, despite of two years of relative peace, unrest continues, sparked primarily by a grim sect that revers the memory of Dark Lord of the Sith Freedon Nadd.

State of the Galaxy

The galaxy enters a time in which the relative peace established after the Fall of the Sith Empire has been shattered. The Galactic Fronties has become a dangerous place even for Jedi Knights, and the Republic has taken its first steps toward full-scale preparation for war. A new breed of Sith devotees has emerged, with new cells blossoming every day across the Known Galaxy. Though many at first tried to deny the rumors, recent events have confirmed the suspicions of Jedi scholars: the Sith have returned...

Brave adventurers are needed to maintain order throughout the Frontier, to preserve the established trade routes, to explore the Unknown Regions, to help the Republic prepare for war, and to join the ranks of the Jedi Knights before the war against the Sith erupts...

from Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi Companion (page 137)

Level of Technology

The long periods of time required for space travel and trans-galactic communication in this era serves to definitely separate the Core from the Galactic Frontier. The events occuring in one parsec may not even be known by the inhabitants of the next for several months, depending on the amount of traffic passing between the two...

Those beings who venture beyond the Expansion region into the Frontier are essentially cut off from the Republic. Though hyperspace jump beacons can be found throughout the Frontier, they are much less reliable and less safe than their Core counterparts. Explorers, traders, exiles, criminals, peace-keepers, and wanderers must have stubborn and resourceful natures to survive in the the uncharted reaches of the galaxy...

Sensor technology is slowly developing over the millennia. At this point, most ships have the ability to detect dangerous levels of radiation, the presence of other starships in the immediate vicinity, pressures surrounding the vessel, temperatures of nearby objects, and large concentrations of life forms on worlds or other celestial phenomena. Current sensors cannot be manipulated to focus or search modes, remaining in passive perception most of the time, unless an operator purposely seeks out information, in which case the sensors go into scan mode...

Communications between or among individuals, vehicles, and starships occur via one of two methods. Direct contact requires a clear line of sight between the two parties. Any spatial phenomena of large proportion disrupting the line of sight prevent communication. Even when functioning without interference, however, this form of communication has a limited distance, usually within a star system. The second method of communication commonly used throughout the galaxy utilizes the hyperspace jump beacons strategically situated in thousands of systems. Messages (sound waves and data files only) are digitally addressed and encoded and are send through the jump beacons at hyperspace speeds. Routing software within the beacons accepts the data stream, returns a confirmation receipt to the last beacon relay, reads the destination, calculates the best route, forwards the message to the next beacon, and waits for confirmation. This second methond, while able to reach far across the galaxy, requires much more time and can be more easily intercepted, altered, or lost...

01:F1, early morning – day (Inner Rim, Stenness sector: Onderon, city of Iziz): The Corellia StarDrive Coruscant-class heavy courier Nebulon Ranger lands at the starport of tge freat walled city of Iziz. Jedi Knight Tott Doneeta is returning from Ambria to deliver Jedi Knight Oss Wilum to the world to help Jedi Master Arca Jeth in his battle against the dark side of the Force.

Queen Galia and her husband, the former beast-lord Oron Kira, lead a funeral procession for Queen Amanoa and Freedon Nadd. Jedi Master Arca Jeth and Jedi Tott Doneeta, Oss Wilum, Ulic Qel-Droma and Cay Qel-Droma follow as the procession heads to the royal spaceport. Jeth has ordered the remains of the two dark side worshippers removed from the world to one of Onderon’s four moons. The presence of the dark side seems to have taken its toll on the Jedi, and they believe Nadd still has a following among the populace, some of whom may be Sith magicians.

Suddenly, a massive machine, a modified Akin-Dower Groundborer, erupts through the surface of the spaceport. Former members of the royal armed forces have allied themselves with the Naddists. Their leader, Warb Null, strides forward, clad in black armor and wielding a lightsaber. During the confrontation, Jedi Master Arca Jeth suffers an invisible blow from the dark side. The dissidents steal the sarcophagi of Amanoa and Freedon Nadd and escape in their mining vehicle, heading deep into the sub-levels of the walled city of Iziz. Jedi Master Arca Jeth realizes that they need help to defeat the Naddists. Queen Galia mentions that her father, King Ommin, knows more about the dark side than her mother. The king has been confined for years to a life-support facility.

As Arca Jeth begins to speak with King Ommin, the spirit of Freedon Nadd appears, saying that the king called him back from the chaos. Nadd imparted his knowledge to the old man, who has been practicing Sith magic ever since. Suddenly, Ommin leaps up, striking out at the Jedi Master. It appears that, although Ommin must rely on a mechanical apparatus to support his physical form, his power in the Force remains. Arca Jeth falls, enveloped by dark side energy. Warb Null appears and Ulic Qel-Droma strikes out against King Ommin’s minions. In the meantime, Ommin steals Jeth’s body and escapes. Fighting past a wall of dark force, Ulic Qel-Droma manages to destroy Warb Null.

Queen Galia and Ulic Qel-Droma return to the upper levels of the city of Iziz to find that the Naddists have taken the Royal Palace. The Jedi decide that they cannot fight this darkness alone: they must call on the Jedi Knights and the forces of the Republic. A base of operations will be set up on former beast-lord Modon Kira’s forest stronghold. (note: MD/date conjectured by the fact that Oss Wilum has just arrived on Onderon after leaving Ambria in Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi # 4)

04:17, morning (Core Worlds: Coruscant, Republic City): The Spacelane Bureau has noted over the years that hyperspace jump beacon patrolers sometimes develop psychological dysfunctions as the result of long-term confinement in a claustrophobic environment. According to the report, these maladies manifest themselves in a variety of ways: from paranoia to full-sensory delusions. Jump beacon patrol members must therefore undergo psychological tests between missions. (note: Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi Companion states that these rumors surfaced ‘recently’)

06:29, late day - evening (Core Worlds: Coruscant, Republic City): A Jedi assembly is called and it is announced that volunteers are needed to rescue Jedi Master Arca Jeth from the forces of the dark side on the Inner Rim world of Onderon. The entire assembly volunteers, including Miraluka apprentice Shoaneb Culu. But her Master, Vodo-Siosk Baas, calls her aside to counsel her on her offer as he feels that she does not yet have enough confidence in her abilities, and that that failing might endanger the entire task force. Culu replies that she understands her master’s reluctance, but explains that she has placed her trust completely in the Force, and she feels it calling to her in this task. Her steady voice and her calm exterior tell Baas that she is ready for her first true test: placing a hand on her shoulder, he tells her to go with the Force.

Five volunteers are chosen: Jedi Knight Dace Diath, Miraluka Jedi Knight Shoaneb Culu, Nazzar Jedi Knight Qrrl Toq, Gotal apprentice Kith Kark and Jedi apprentice Nomi Sunrider. After the assembly, Jedi Master Thon congratulates Sunrider, remarking that her spirit is rushing toward destiny.

Nomi Sunrider’s daughter, Vima, will be quite safe among her newfound friends on the Jedi world, while Sunrider and her companions begin to prepare for their journey across the galaxy to Onderon to take up arms against the dark siders. (note: Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi Companion states that this occurs ‘several months after’ Nomi Sunrider’s arrival on Ossus. 06:30, late day (Core Worlds: Coruscant, Republic City): Satal Keto and his cousin Aleema, heirs to the throne of the Empress Teta system, enter the Galactic Museum, seeking the Sith artifacts supposedly preserved there. They have formed a secret society of magicians called the Krath, named for an evil magician-god from the fables of their world. Eventually, Satal Keto and Aleema find the museum’s “Sith Hall” and steal one of the ancient Sith books. Keto believes the book contains magical formulas, but he cannot read the language in which they are written. After seeing a Galactic News Report about the dispatching of a Republic fleet to Onderon to help fight against the dark forces of Freedon Nadd, Aleema and Satal Keto decide to journey to the world in hopes of finding someone who can translate the book for them.

06:33 early morning – late day (Inner Rim, Stenness sector: Onderon, city of Iziz): Satal Keto and his cousin Aleema, heirs to the throne of the Empress Teta system, exit hyperspace near Onderon right in the middle of the Republic fleet which arrived to help Jedi forces on the dark side world to rescue Jedi Master Arca Jeth. Keto plunges the Krath Enchanter through the fleet, heading to the planet in the hope that someone can translate the ancient Sith book he stole from the Galactic Museum on Coruscant.

Republic rocket-jumpers rain from the skies over Iziz. The Krath Enchanter plunges into the atmosphere, straight into the line of fire. The ship is hit, its repulsors destroyed, and Satal Keto fights to control the crash-landing. The vessel smashes into the cobblestone streets of Iziz, but Aleema and Keto manage to escape as its fuel tanks explode in a fiery torrent.

Meanwhile, Jedi cruisers probe the wilderness of Onderon, homing in on Jedi apprentice Ulic Qel-Droma’s radio beacon. Using the Force as a war-shield, the arriving Jedi charge toward the citadel where Qel-Droma and his comrades are defending against a Naddist siege. As the Jedi plow through the ranks of the followers of Dark Lord of the Sith Freedon Nadd, Jedi apprentice Nomi Sunrider finds that an energy field is blocking her battle meditation ability. Jedi Knight Dace Diath confronts a Sith war droid which radiates the dark side. During the battle a dark side energy field drains away Kith Kark’s Force shield, allowing a wave-pulse from a nearby cannon to strike the Gotal apprentice a mortal blow.

A ragtag group of beast-riders, accompanied by Jedi Knights and apprentices, emerge from beast-lord Modon Kira’s stronghold. Dace Diath asks them why they do not fight, and Jedi apprentice Ulic Qel-Droma replies that the Sith magic has sapped their strenght over the past few months. But as the two forces of Jedi join, Qel-Droma feels himself growing stronger. The combined force of Jedi takes the upper hand in the battle, but Jedi apprentice Nomi Sunrider finds herself under focused attack from the same dark presence that has sapped Ulic Qel-Droma’s strength. She crumples under a powerful Force-blow. Qel-Droma helps Sunrider, who had a vision of the person who attacked her: an emaciated old man on a metal armature.

In the meantime, Satal Keto and Aleema have been showing their Sith book around the city of Iziz. A man approaches them and says that his master can decipher the strange language. The Naddist leads the two aristocrats into the deep sub-levels of the city to see King Ommin. Ommin, who is under the influence of the specter of Dark Lord of the Sith Freedon Nadd, gives Keto a Sith amulet which concentrates the power of the dark side of the Force. When Satal Keto dons the amulet, he is suddenly able to read the Sith book. Ommin agrees to give him the amulet of he allows him to make a copy of the Sith tome. Ommin shows the two heirs to the throne of the Empress Teta system his prized possession: the captured Jedi Master Arca Jeth, writhing under the power of the dark side. King Ommin’s goal is to extinguish the light from Jeth and to then raise him up as a Dark Jedi.

The seven apprentice Jedi sense Jedi Master Arca Jeth’s torment and charge past the dark-side protectors and the Sith war droids, descending into the depths of the undercity, where they come face to face with King Ommin. Ommin throws a wave of dark side hatred at the Jedi, battering them back. Ulic Qel-Droma, bathed in the light side, fights off the darkness and rushes forward, slashing with his lightsaber at the metal armature that holds Ommin’s body erect. Without support, the old King collapses.

During the fight, Satal Keto and Aleema retreat into the recesses of the sub-levels as Ulic Qel-Droma demands to know what has happened to Jedi Master Arca Jeth. Ommins tells him that Jeth has gone to the dark side, as will they. Realizing King Ommin has lost, Freedon Nadd appears to Satal Keto and Aleema in a deep access corridor to convince them that they alone hold the key to the rebirth of the Sith Golden Age, and that he will guide them. The specter gives them the Sith book, the Sith amulet, and a pair of Sith swords. Then, Nadd appears near the body of Ommin, saying that, unlike the brave Jedi arrayed before him, the old man belongs to the dark side. As Ommin passes into the Force, Arca Jeth is freed and Freedon Nadd’s specter fades with the words that the Jedi have lost, though they do not yet know it.

With King Ommin dead and the Naddists squelched, the Republic forces quickly restore order to the city of Iziz. The city is placed under martial law, and off-worlders are evacuated to their home planets. Concealed among the departing travelers, Satal Keto and his cousin Aleema return across the galaxy to the Empress Teta system, with their Sith treasures concealed in their baggage. The work of removing the dark side influences from Onderon will continue under the direction of Jedi Master Arca Jeth and his apprentices.
