The survival of the Republic depends on two factors: wise governing by administrators and lawmakers, and the preservation of harmony and justice by the Jedi. It is a practice for Jedi to become guardians of new star systems, overseeing transitions and assisting with local difficulties.

Month 4

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi Companion (Chapter Two: The Jedi: Chamma)                                                                                                                                        page 22

04:19, early morning (H’ratth): Believing the Force had betrayed him a hundred standard years before during his first mission as a full-fledged Jedi Knight an Athiss, Chamma had exiled himself to the world of H’ratth. Over the past century, his thoughts had slowly turned completely inward. Chamma expects nothing from and offers nothing to anything outside of himself. Maintaining a residence on the barren world, he never vetured farther than the nearest space station.

Chamma awakes to find a stranger standing in the middle of his squat adobe residence. The near-Human with white, pupil-less eyes, explains that he has come to return Chamma to the light. When Chamma reaches for his lightsaber, the stranger remarks that he does not need that as they have no dispute: all Chamma has to do is listen, and then he will take his leave. But Chamma takes his lightsaber, and replies that nobody is to tell him what to do. He then tells the stranger to go. The Miralukan Jedi obeys Chamma’s wishes and leaves. (note: Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi Companion states that these events occur ‘a hundred years’ after Chamma’s encounter on Athiss)

Chamma awakes to find a stranger standing in the middle of his squat adobe residence. Just like the morning before, the near-Human explains that he has come to return Chamma to the light. Chamma once again tells the stranger to leave, and the Miralukan Jedi obeys. 04:21, early morning (H’ratth) Believing the Force had betrayed him during his first mission as a full-fledged Jedi Knight an Athiss a hundred standard years before, Chamma had exiled himself to the world of H’ratth. Over the past century, his thoughts had slowly turned completely inward. Chamma expects nothing from and offers nothing to anything outside of himself. Maintaining a residence on the barren world, he never vetured farther than the nearest space station.

For the third morning in a row, Chamma awakes to find a Miralukan Jedi standing in the middle of his residence. Just like the past two mornings, the near-Human explains that he has come to return Chamma to the light. Chamma once again tells the stranger to leave, and the Miralukan Jedi obeys. 04:22, early morning (H’ratth) Believing the Force had betrayed him during his first mission as a full-fledged Jedi Knight an Athiss a hundred standard years before, Chamma had exiled himself to the world of H’ratth. Over the past century, his thoughts had slowly turned completely inward. Chamma expects nothing from and offers nothing to anything outside of himself. Maintaining a residence on the barren world, he never vetured farther than the nearest space station.

For the fourth morning in a row, Chamma awakes to find a Miralukan Jedi standing in the middle of his residence. Just like the past three mornings, the near-Human explains that he has come to return Chamma to the light. But instead of sending the stranger away, Chamma gives in and allows him to speak. The Miralukan introduces himself as Noab Hulis and begins to tell a story of a young Jedi Knight who had encountered a Sith devotee, a fallen Jedi who had mastered the ways of the Sith and the dark side. The Sith creature, along with two others who had escaped during the fall of the Sith Empire, lured three Jedi to a remote world, hoping to begin a new sect of Sith fanatics. The three Jedi Knights were young and eager, but they lacked the experience necessary to survive an encounter with such beings. Delving into his century-old, surpressed memories, Chamma realizes that Hulis speaks of him and his Jedi companions, and the events of the night on Athiss a hundred years ago that he had tried all his life to forget.

Noab Hulis continues his tale: the Sith separated the trio and assaulted each with waves of dark-side energy, momentarily disconnecting them from the Force, allowing fear, anger, and hatred to overcome them. Miraculously, the youngest of the three Jedi defeated one of the Sith beings, and the two other dark siders fled, fearing that these guardians of the light were more powerful than they had expected.

When Chamma realizes that the Force had not betrayed him, but that the power of the dark side had cut him off from the light, he breaks into tears. He realizes that it was he who had done the betraying and had abandoned the Force.
